International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE) Examination

International General Secondary SchoolThe Institute of General Certificate of Education (IGCSE) examination is designed for secondary school students. It consists of about 70 academic and career-oriented subjects. It is recognised by over 4,700 universities in more than 145 countries worldwide. It is an ideal starting point for A-Level or IAL examinations.

All in all.GCE ExamThe system provides a wide range of examination options. The system provides a wide range of examination choices to suit the learning needs of different students. By takingGeneral Certificate of Education,British International BaccalaureateandInternational General Secondary SchoolDiploma of Education (DfE) examinations, etc. will enable students to obtain internationally recognised qualifications.DiplomaThis will give them more opportunities for further studies and career development in the future. This will bring them more opportunities for further studies and career development in the future.

Advantages of self-study GCE

Flexible Examination Hours

The GCE examination schedule is flexible, especially for the IAL examination, which is held twice a year, in January and June. This allows students to choose their own exam time to suit their own study schedule.

In contrast, the DSE exam is taken only once, and each year you generally have to wait a year before you can retake it.The success rate for the DSE's second chance is very low, at only 0.6%.

Highly recognised internationally

The GCE Diploma is recognised worldwide. With a GCE Diploma, you can apply to top universities around the world. A significant proportion of students at the University of Cambridge are GCE candidates, and their grades are usually as high as A*-A.

In comparison, local universities have higher requirements for DSE results. Take the University of Hong Kong's MBBS as an example, only 3 students with 3A*1A and 1 student with 2A*2A were admitted.

It also shows that the GCE Diploma is more widely recognised internationally, giving students more options for further study.

Strongly focused examination content

The GCE examinations are tailored to allow students to choose subjects according to their interests and future goals. In the case of the IAL/GCEAL examination, for example, students are only required to take three subjects, one of which is Chinese. This arrangement is in line with students' individual needs.

The GCE also emphasises critical thinking and problem solving skills. This is very much in line with the educational philosophy of the university.

Local University ProgrammesGCE RecruitmentDSE Recruitment
HKU Accounting and Finance1535
CUHK Business Administration2040
HKU Law1025

The above table shows that GCE students account for a large proportion of local university admissions. In Hong Kong, 40-50% of GCE students graduating from high quality schools are admitted to UK universities. This proportion is increasing. Today, there are 16,000 Hong Kong students studying in the UK.

In conclusion, self-study GCE has many advantages, including flexible examination time, international recognition of the diploma, and customised examination content. Self-study GCE is a good choice for students who dream of studying abroad. Although the tuition fee is high, as long as you have a goal and the right learning method, you will definitely succeed.

Eligibility and Dates

The GCE is an internationally recognised qualification assessment. There are no specific restrictions on applicants. Anyone wishing to obtain an international diploma can take it.

Selection of Exam Subjects

The GCE allows you to choose from a wide range of subjects, such as maths, economics and accounting. Choosing a subject depends on what you like and what you want to do in the future. Organising the level of difficulty of the subjects and your abilities can help you make a smart choice.

Popular Elective Subjects

In GCE, some subjects are often chosen by students. For example, in Hong Kong, the high pass rate in Mathematics shows that this is where students are strong. Economics, Accounting and the science subjects of Biology, Chemistry and Physics are also popular. These subjects are not only useful for further studies, but also in the workplace.

Elective subjectsNumber of IAL subjectsAverage pass rate in 2022
Math892.5%
Economics484.7%
Biology681.2%
Chemistry587.9%
Physics779.6%

Subject selection skills

When choosing a subject, candidates should bear in mind the following points.

  1. Choose a subject that you are good at and are interested in.
  2. Find out what subjects you want to study at university in the future and pick the relevant ones.
  3. Balance the difficulty of the subjects, don't choose all the difficult ones.
  4. Ensure that the subjects chosen are coherent and form a complete body of knowledge.
  5. Seek help from teachers, parents or college counsellors to make an informed choice.
"Choosing GCE subjects is for future study. Students should carefully analyse the subjects and combine them with their own strengths in order to choose the best ones. In this way, you will be on your way to your favourite school." - Katherine Cheung, Senior Careers Advisor

All in all, you need to consider various aspects in choosing your subjects. Mastering the skills of choosing the right subject and expressing yourself will help you to easily face the examination and get good grades. This will be a good start for you on your way to higher education.

Remarks Strategy

In order to do well in the GCE exam, it is important to have a well thought out preparation strategy. Below you will find some effective study plans and methods. These methods will help you to prepare for the exams more efficiently and get to grips with the key points of the exams.

make learning plan

Firstly, candidates need to draw up a detailed study plan. This study plan should reflect the countdown to the examination date. Break down the overall preparation process into different stages. Each stage should have clear learning objectives and timelines.

Make good use of online learning resources

There is a wealth of GCE study resources available on the internet, such as official websites and study guides. These resources can be used as a supplement to your studies. They help you to better understand the content and type of exam.

In addition, there are past exam questions and marking references. They will teach you a lot of tips and tricks to cope with the exams. Also, joining an online learning community will allow you to share your experiences with other students.

Seek professional counselling

If you're having trouble with your studies, don't be afraid to call in the experts. Seek guidance from a tutor who can develop a customised plan for your problem. Experienced tutors can also share test-taking strategies, which can help boost your confidence.

"I joined Getutor's online one-to-one tutoring programme and the tutor gave me a personalised revision schedule and practical tips for my exams to address my weaknesses. My grades improved greatly and I was able to get my A Level certificate." - Cindy, GCE Self-study Student

In conclusion, to perform well in the GCE exams, students need to:

  • Develop a comprehensive study plan and specify the progress of preparation for examinations
  • Make good use of the various online official resources and study guides to enhance your understanding of the exam content.
  • Seek professional tutorial support when needed to help you overcome learning difficulties

By following these three tips, you'll get twice the results with half the effort and excel in your GCE exams!

Private Tutoring Recommendations
