If you have studied in Hong Kong all your life and are now planning to study for GCE/A-level or GCSE exams in the UK, the transition may be difficult and torturous because you will be taught in pure English. Many students wonder how difficult this period is, depending on your original English proficiency.
If your biology, chemistry, or physics courses are taught in Chinese, you may have to look up the dictionary frequently during class, especially for some scientific terms. Even if you learned the English equivalents of these words in biology, for example, mitochondria (Mitochondria), pancreas (Pancreas) and glucose (Glucose). You may also encounter language difficulties in other areas.
Additionally, even if your course in Hong Kong is in English, be aware that there are many different accents in the UK. If your English writing skills are less than ideal, here are a few things to remember:
1. When you write exam answers, you are usually asked to write complete sentences, so you cannot use bullets.
2. Many students worry about grammatical errors, which affects their grades. We recommend that you don't worry about it, as the examiners don't actually care that much about it (unless you're taking an English exam). UK syllabuses usually have an international version (International GCSE or International A-level) and the examiners know English as a second language students. There are many immigrants and students of different nationalities in British schools, and it is difficult to require perfect grammar from all of them.
3. As long as your grammar doesn’t have errors that affect the meaning of your answer or the examiner can’t understand you, that’s fine!

Sometimes the English terminology you use in the exam is not quite correct, for example you heard the term and spelled it wrong based on its pronunciation – don’t worry, the examiner will usually accept these answers too! They assess your scientific knowledge, not your English, so some flexibility is allowed.
Overall, if your course in Hong Kong was taught in English, and you completed your assignments and exams in English, you'll probably be perfectly fine when it comes to switching to a British course. If your course in Hong Kong is taught in Chinese, you may encounter some difficulties with class lectures, written responses, long questions and essay-based examination questions. But keep learning, and after a few months, you will be able to adapt well to the new language environment!

On the contrary, if your goal is not a higher math score and you want a 5 or lower, we recommend that you focus on the basic questions. If you review well and are confident in the basic questions, you won't make mistakes and can get a stable score in the basic part of the exam. During the exam, you can look at the Higher Tier questions to see if you can try to score in this section. Don't worry about the difficult questions, we just need to focus on laying the foundation. In contrast, the MYP does not have a clear curriculum. Instead, it allows each school to customize its own syllabus and encourages students to study subjects jointly. For example, MYP students could simultaneously study an infectious disease unit in biology, do a group project on the historical Black Death, and review English-language literature from countries affected by malaria. The MYP also includes individual projects as part of its assessment criteria. 好多人以為讀 A-Level 嘅學生集中喺港島區國際學校,大埔邊有幾多人考 GCE A-Level?呢個諗法已經 outdated 咗。根據 GETUTOR 後台 2024-2026 年大埔區配對紀錄,樣本約 180 宗,A-Level 相關查詢喺過去兩年增長咗大約 67%。*當中唔少係區內直資學校(例如王肇枝中學、迦密柏雨中學嘅 其他國際學制 銜接生)同埋由 其他國際學制 轉軌去英國升學嘅學生。
問題係:大埔區 A-Level 導師供應量偏低。GETUTOR 平台上超過 12,400 位導師當中,能夠教 A-Level(包括 Edexcel、CIE、OCR 考試局)嘅,得大約 6%。*再 filter 到肯上大埔區嘅,就更加少。呢個就係點解大埔區 A-Level 平均配對時間要成 6.4 小時 — 比 其他國際學制 科目慢成倍。*

Mr. T(按導師私隱要求使用化名,導師資歷已獲 GETUTOR 平台認證)— 香港科技大學理學士畢業(主修數學),A-Level Pure Maths A*、Further Maths A。曾喺英國讀 Sixth Form 兩年,返港後全職做私補,主力補大埔、沙田區嘅 A-Level 同 其他國際學制 學生。教學年資 5 年,累計教過超過 30 個 A-Level 學生,當中 9 個攞到 A 或以上。教學風格係「逼你寫 full working」,唔俾學生跳步。
Mr. T 指出:「好多由 其他國際學制 轉軌嘅學生有個通病 — 佢哋習慣咗 其他國際學制 嗰種『揀答案』思維,特別係 MC。但 A-Level 幾乎全部都係 structured question,你要由頭寫到尾,每一步 logic 都要清楚。我見過唔少學生明明識做,但因為少寫咗一行 justification 就被扣分。」
佢嘅教法好實際:第一堂一定係做一份完整 past paper,唔係教書。做完之後逐題對,唔係對答案咁簡單,而係對「你寫咗幾多步」。好多學生第一堂先發現,自己識嘅嘢同考試要求差好遠。
另一個重點係 exam board 之間嘅分別。Mr. T 話:「Edexcel 同 CIE 嘅 A-Level Maths,內容有大約 79% 重疊,但出題風格完全唔同。Edexcel 鍾意出 real-life context 嘅應用題,CIE 就偏向 pure mathematical proof。你用錯 past paper 操卷,等於白做。好多學生嚟到我度先知自己一直操緊另一個 exam board 嘅卷。」

大埔區有個特點:因為區內有幾間直資同資助學校嘅學生會同時考 其他國際學制 同 A-Level(當 backup),所以呢度嘅導師反而要識「兩邊走」。能夠同時教 其他國際學制 Maths 同 A-Level Pure Maths 嘅導師,喺大埔區係最搶手嘅。
防伏位 1:用錯 exam board 嘅 past paper
呢個聽落好低級,但根據 GETUTOR 導師 feedback,大約 23% 嘅新學生第一堂被發現操緊錯嘅 exam board past paper。*最常見係將 Edexcel 同 CIE 搞混 — 兩者嘅 paper 編號格式唔同,但 Google 搜出嚟嘅 past paper 網站好多都無清楚標明。搞錯嘅後果唔止浪費時間,仲會令你對出題 pattern 有錯誤期望。
防伏位 2:A-Level Essay 唔係「寫多啲就高分」
Miss L(按導師私隱要求使用化名,導師資歷已獲 GETUTOR 平台認證)— 香港大學社會科學學士畢業(主修經濟),A-Level Economics A*。曾喺英國讀 A-Level 兩年,返港後做全職私補,主力補大埔、北區嘅 A-Level Economics。教學年資 4 年,教過 22 個 A-Level Econ 學生,當中 7 個攞 A 或以上。教學風格係「每篇 essay 至少改三次」。
Miss L 指出:「A-Level Economics 嘅 essay,mark scheme 好睇重 evaluation。你可以寫得好短,但只要有 clear evaluation point(例如 ‘However, this depends on the elasticity of demand…’),就可以攞到 analysis 同 evaluation 嘅分。反而我見過啲學生寫咗成版 description,但一句 evaluation 都無,結果得一半分都唔到。」
防伏位 3:Calculus 嘅 +C 唔寫就零分
A-Level Maths 嘅 Integration 題目,如果係 indefinite integral,唔寫 +C(constant of integration)可以由滿分變零分。呢個唔係誇張 — CIE 嘅 mark scheme 明確寫住:’Without +C, lose the final A mark, which may cascade.’ Mr. T 話佢每個新學生都要喺第一堂簽一份「+C 承諾書」(佢自己整嘅),提醒自己永遠唔好漏。
